Eye Coloring Tutorial

Eye Coloring Tutorial

Image hosting by Photobucket

Done in PS 7…not sure if it’d translate easily or not. Very image heavy so dial up users, beware.

People are always asking me how I do the eye coloring on my graphics so I decided to write up a little tutorial on it. This won’t work on every eye. A lot of it depends on the lighting, coloring of the picture you’re using. But with a lot of playing around, you’re sure to find something you like. And I'm sure that there are other ways...better ways of doing this, but this is how I do it :)

So I open up the picture that I want to use. In this example I’m using Chris Jericho’s beautiful eyes.

The first thing I do is sharpen it once FILTER>>SHARPEN>>SHARPEN

Then I zoom way in on the eyes. I select my Dodge Tool

Brush size 10 round default(and that’ll vary depending on how much you zoom in and how big your picture is, but for this one I’m using a 10)
Range: Midtones
Exposure: 80%

And I just kind of sparingly use it on the eye's iris area

It’s subtle, but you can see what I’ve done. You don’t want to use too much or it’ll make it look unnatural

Now make a new layer and zoom in again if you aren’t still. Pick the color that you’d like to use. Select your brush tool and again with a round default size 10, color in the iris area of the eye.

Here I used #213794. Then set the blend mode to Overlay

Ohhhh, pretty!!!

Here’s using #1B7B86

And #273158

With #475B8B

And finally with #266123

Its really just a matter of playing around with the colors and finding something that looks nice. I try to keep it relatively natural looking with mine. Sometimes the Color Burn blend mode will give some nice results, but 99% of the time I use Overlay.

Here are a few more examples with a different picture

Here are a couple more that I did a while back. Unfortunately I don't have the .psd saved anymore to tell what colors I used.

Cool tutorial.
Man. I miss him on WWE. =\
Yeah, I'm glad that he's happy doing his thing right now, but I really, really miss him too :(
Oh neat! I'm definitely mem'ing this; that you posted a lot of different color choices makes this a really good reference.

Thank you!
i love this +mems =D

Thanks

Thanks Doug for the heads-up. I do have access to highspeed at coffee shops and what-not so they're pretty cool.

Definitely a useful tutorial--it probably can translate to PSP quite easily, which is a plus! Thanks for sharing--adding this to the memories of my icon journal ^_^!
Oh...wow...that's amazing. Definitely saving this to mems. Outstanding tut.
Brilliant, thank you! But what exactly did you do with the dodge tool on the pupil? I can't actually see any difference... :S
Sorry...I meant iris... I used it on the iris. It's not a big difference...just enough to add a little more light. And it can be done with more or less, just depending on what your preferance is :)
OOOOOOHHH... *headdesk*

Right, I SEE that. I was being single minded in looking at the pupil. Thanks!
Well, I had originally put pupil in the tutorial so its natural to be looking there. I know I would have been if I was reading it. I fixed it now though so thank you for bringing my mistake to my attention :)
wow, thats absoloutely beautiful and extremely helpful. thanks so much
*adds 2 memories* :3
mind you - his eyes were perfect & beautiful to begin with........*swoooooooooooooon*
Of course :)
Really beautiful--love this!

I'm new to this sort of thing and am just wondering...did you do anything to the original picture before working on the eyes to get that sort of sepia-ish color to it? I know that's not the right word to describe it, but I'm not sure what the right word is....
No, I didn't. That is the way the picture originally was :)
I know that in PSP7 there is a setting to change an image to sepia-tone (Effects -- Artistic Effects -- Sepia...) but I'm not sure if it's in later versions or anywhere on Photoshop. Probably is though, it's a very common effect in photo altering.
There might be, but that I know of, there isn't an actual sepia filter in Ps. What I usually do when I want that sort of effect is desaturate my image

And then on a new layer flood fill with a tanish/brownish color. Here I used #D5CFA3, but just kind of play around until you find a color you like and then set the blend mode to Multiply

and then just tweak it to your liking. I like a new layer flood filled with black set to Soft Light with the opacity down to about 30/40 or however you like it...gives the picture a little more depth

I wanted to let you know that this is a fantastic tutorial! I tried it and to my surprise (because I often never get anything!), it worked. I varied your technique a bit, but the basics are similar!

Thank you :)

Cool! I'm glad that you were able to make it work :)
this is great stuffs -- +mem.

i really wish i knew what color you used for that third one from the bottom, the brown. that's _exactly_ the color i'm trying to make. ah well, guess and check.
Okay, I did some playing with colors and here are a couple of brownish results that I got:
